What to do if there are stains and spots on your roof?

Having a regular roof inspection is the key to spotting issues before they turn into something serious. Having a solid roof to protect you against the outside elements during our Canadian winters, thaws, and spring rains is essential to your roof’s protection. If you are noticing a change in your roof’s appearance from inclement weather over time be sure to act quickly.  One of the most common causes of an aging roof is water damage! Water damage not only leaves unwanted moisture stains on your roof, but it can also do damage to the inside of your home! The roofers at ACCL Roofer have provided this article with tips on how you can spot water stains on your roof and what the different colors of stains can tell you!

Colored stains and spots:Stains water leak

You may not know you have a problem with your roof until you see signs inside your building or home, such as colored spots or stains on your ceiling or puddles on your floor- see below:

Green and black stains:Stains black mold

Noticing stains or discoloration on your roof that are green or black in color can indicate the growth of mold, mildew, moss, and algae.   If you have mold in your home or building, you need to take action right away for the safety of everyone.

Yellow and white stains:

Seeing yellow and white staining on you roof may suggest hard-water buildup from an air conditioner or evaporation cooler. You will mostly notice this type of staining on lower areas of your roof.

Brown spots:

When you notice brown patches, or spots on your interior walls and ceiling it is a sign that your roof is leaking.

How to solve the problem?

Addressing the cause of the stains and spots is your first step to repairing it. The quicker you act the less damage your home will have.  The extent of repairs depends on the amount of damage your home has received. Power-spraying or scrubbing the problem on your own is possible, but likely to cause further, irreparable damage. If you haven’t already called your roofing company here are some options to clean up water stains:

  1. Using a water/bleach solution to wipe the stain away.
  2. Removing the damaged part of the ceiling or drywall and replacing.
