LEAKING ROOFS – ACCL ROOFING
Nobody wants to discover water dripping from their ceiling. Whether you are home when the leak begins or you arrive home to find it, it is critical that you act quickly to prevent more damage to your house.
KEEP THE LEAK FROM EXPANDING
If water is dripping from a bulge or discoloration in your ceiling, it is most likely accumulating on the other side of the bulge or dark spot. Place a bucket, garbage can, or other container beneath the source of the drip or suspected leak. You might even want to prop up a board inside the container so that the drips land on the board rather than the accumulating water. The sound of dripping will be reduced as a result.
Then, using an old screwdriver, identify the centre of the bulge where water is collecting and puncture it right in the middle. Though punching a hole in your ceiling to halt a leak may seem unusual, the new hole will allow the water to drain smoothly and relieve pressure on the remainder of your ceiling. The entire ceiling could collapse if water collects and pools.
Cover the outer surface with a wide tarp if you are convinced you know where the leak is coming from and can safely get to the source. It’s best to contact a roofing specialist right away if you can’t reach it or feel unsafe doing so. Many reputable roofing businesses do emergency tarping. Unfortunately, if your roof is actively leaking due to weather, a roofing specialist will not be able to repair the leak until the weather stops. The tarping service will work as a temporary remedy to keep the damage inside your home to a minimum until your roofer can resolve the issue.
An expert roofing professional will inspect your roof from both the outside of the roof and the inside of your home, most commonly through the attic. Although viewing the underside of the roof sheeting can reveal symptoms of water damage, it is not a perfect procedure, therefore you should also verify the roof for damage.
THE RISKS OF WAITING
When a roof leak occurs, it is critical to act fast. Roof leaks never go away or get better on their own. Even if the leak isn’t as catastrophic as it could be. Now is the time to correct it. We frequently hear from homeowners who have spotted a stain on their ceiling or even some bubbling for some time but dismissed it as unimportant. A leak in your roof will not be fixed by avoiding it or ignoring it. Many times, it is too late by the time you notice damage in your home. Your roof should be inspected twice a year, in the fall and spring, according to the National Roofing Contractors Association. Here’s what to check for to save a fixable problem from becoming a costly and time-consuming repair:
On the inside, search for the following:
- Spots of darkness
- Spots where the light from the outside shines through
- Sagging
Keep an eye out for the following on the outside:
- Shingles that are missing, twisted, rotting, peeling, fractured, blistering, or buckling
- Gutters and downspouts that are clogged or drain slowly
- Around chimneys and vents, loose material or worn
If your roof is less than 15 years old, it can most likely be repaired rather than replaced entirely. Just keep in mind that a minor leak will not go away; instead, it will worsen.
Roof leaks are usually symptoms of a much larger issue. If left untreated, both the danger and the likelihood of structural deterioration increase. Your best defense against a leaking roof is regular inspections. Keep an eye out for leaks and chat to your contractor about the state of your roof on a frequent basis.
